WebP is an image format developed by Google in 2010. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and even animation in a single format. Lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than equivalent PNG files. Lossy WebP files are 25-34% smaller than equivalent JPG files. All major browsers have supported WebP since 2020, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996 as a patent-free alternative to GIF. It supports full-color images with an alpha channel for transparency. PNG files preserve every pixel exactly, which makes them ideal for screenshots, logos, UI elements, and graphics with sharp text. The trade-off is file size: PNG images are typically 3-5x larger than equivalent JPG files for photographic content.
